White-space wireless technologies to be put to the test

New Scientist : When television broadcasts switched from analog to digital a few years ago, a swath of the radio spectrum was freed up because digital signals use less bandwidth. Since then, companies have been experimenting with various technologies to make use of that newly available “white space .” Those technologies are about to be put to the test in Europe. One involves the use of sensors placed throughout a city to create a smart network capable of monitoring such things as traffic and flooding. Another involves using available white space to provide wireless broadband to rural areas. Until now, development of white-space technologies has been slowed by the need to ensure that they do not interfere with existing TV signals or each other and that they can be scaled up to handle millions of users.
