New Scientist: The America COMPETES Reauthorization Act, which contains a resolution to boost science funding over the next three years, was passed at the end of 2010. Funding for the act, however, is not assured. As budget-minded Republicans take control of the US House of Representatives in 2011, science could take a hit, writes David Shiga for New Scientist. Though the White House is not expected to release its proposed 2012 budget until February, and despite pressure to reduce the budget deficit, President Obama has called for investment in science and technology to be maintained. “There’s going to be a big fight,” says Michael Lubell of the American Physical Society.
