US investigates geoengineering to mitigate global warming

OCT 04, 2010
Physics Today
Washington Post : At a conference last week, the question was asked, Can humans manipulate the climate in a responsible and effective way? Over the next months, several groups, including the Government Accountability Office and a bipartisan task force of experts, will recommend ways to start a federal research program on geoengineering , by either solar radiation management, which deflects sunlight away from Earth, or carbon dioxide removal, which removes already released greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. Although critics point out that such climate engineering is untested and potentially dangerous, it is being proposed as a stopgap measure to counter global warming.
