Underwater robot modeled on Amazon fish

BBC : The weakly electric knifefish of the Amazon basin is the model for a fish robot developed by Malcolm MacIver of Northwestern University and coworkers. The knifefish is able to navigate and hunt in the dark waters of the Amazon River and its tributaries by generating an electric field and detecting distortions in that field. The researchers have incorporated that capability, along with the fish’s ability to swim both horizontally and vertically, in a series of robotic models. The technology could be used to design an underwater vehicle able to navigate murky waters and repair damaged equipment or study sunken ships.
