UK sets up defense advisory group

Nature News : Scientific advice is frequently sought in the UK, but on security-related issues the advice usually comes from inside the government.Now, the UK government has recruited a group of 11 academics to tackle tricky scientific problems related to defense, similar to the JASON group in the US.The UK group was assembled by Mark Welland , the UK Ministry of Defence’s chief scientific adviser, and John Beddington , the UK government’s chief scientific adviser.The group was tasked with looking at ways to improve radiation detection at the nation’s ports to prevent terrorism and smuggling of nuclear material.
