Times Online: The UK research councils (RCUK), which oversees the UK government’s spending on science and technology, has said it believes that many of the obstacles associated with producing fusion power are close to being overcome.The RCUK wants to commit Britain to a 20-year research and construction plan that would see a fusion power station in operation around 2030. Didcot in Oxfordshire is among the sites under consideration for the European High Power laser Energy Research (HiPER) project: a facility dedicated to demonstrating the feasibility of laser driven fusion as a future energy source.
