Nature: At a meeting last week in Bremen, Germany, scientists reported the first results from the Solar Dynamics Observatory. Launched in February into a geosynchronous orbit, SDO observes the Sun’s magnetic field structure and atmosphere on short length and time scales, the aim being to relate magnetic variability to the internal and external dynamics of solar plasma.
