New York Times: Since several South Korean reactors were shut down a few months ago because of faulty cables, an official investigation has turned up faked safety tests on critical equipment and bribes to get company officials to accept substandard parts. To date, at least 14 of the country’s 23 nuclear power plants have been found to have questionable components installed. “What has been revealed so far may be the tip of an iceberg,” said Kune Suh of Seoul National University. South Korea’s nuclear woes may be due in part to the country’s heavy dependence on nuclear power and the close ties between nuclear power companies, suppliers, and testing companies. The reactor shutdowns have resulted in a nationwide energy-saving campaign during a particularly hot summer.
