Simulation suggests black hole horizons become fractal

New Scientist : In 2007 the equations describing fluids and those describing black holes were shown to have mathematical duality —the first could be converted into the second, and vice versa. Allan Adams of MIT and his colleagues used that idea to model a turbulent fluid system and then transformed the model into a black hole system. As their simulation ran, they examined the properties of the model. The surface area of the black hole’s event horizon appeared to be infinite, which is a characteristic of fractals . Because the model itself is simpler than a real black hole, it isn’t clear whether turbulence in the black hole’s surface actually causes it to become fractal. However, if it does, the fractality may be detectable in the gravitational waves emitted by black holes.
