New York Times: In its preelection manifesto, Pledge to America, the Republican party vowed to restore discretionary nonmilitary spending to 2008 levels. For science, which has seen federal support rise under President Obama, the pledge’s spending levels would entail an overall cut of 12.3%. According to the American Association for the Advancement of Science, which has analyzed the pledge’s implications agency by agency, NSF would be hit especially hard, losing 19% or $1 billion.
The finding that the Saturnian moon may host layers of icy slush instead of a global ocean could change how planetary scientists think about other icy moons as well.
