New York Times: A power failure on Monday temporarily cut off the flow of water to the four pools used to cool radioactive material at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. Although Tokyo Electric Power Company was able to restore power within a day, the incident raised questions regarding the precariousness of the makeshift systems still in use two years after the nuclear meltdown caused by the magnitude-9.0 earthquake and tsunami. The power outage has been linked to a rat, whose charred remains were discovered inside a faulty switchboard. It is believed the animal caused the short circuit by gnawing through the switchboard’s cables.
