New laser machine removes lung tumors

SEP 13, 2010
Physics Today
Daily Mail : A new laser machine that vaporizes lung tumors was introduced this year at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London. The machineâmdash;which fires 70 kilowatts of energy per square centimeter, the equivalent power of 70 microwave ovensâmdash;is most often used on secondary tumors, because they are smaller and more numerous, and because primary tumors usually require more of the lung be removed. According to George Ladas, the hospital’s leading thoracic surgeon, the new method means patients are under general anesthetic for about half the time of the old operating method, operating times and hospital stays are reduced, and patients recover faster.
