BBC: The height of part of the Himalayas mountain range has dropped by about a meter since the Nepal earthquake of 25 April. Scientists at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) have compared satellite imagery of the mountain range from before and after the quake. The mountains in and around the Langtang region are “further away from the satellite and [are] lower now,” said Christian Minet of the DLR. However, other areas, including Kathmandu, are closer to the satellite, which shows they have been uplifted. Because authorities in Nepal are still conducting search and rescue operations, they have not yet begun to assess the earthquake’s effects on the area.
Despite the tumultuous history of the near-Earth object’s parent body, water may have been preserved in the asteroid for about a billion years.
