The American Institute of Physics (AIP), a prominent U. S. non-profit scientific publisher and physics service organization, announces the appointment of a new Vice President of Publishing, John S. Haynes. Haynes will take the helm of AIP’s publishing in Melville, NY, overseeing publication facilities for producing more than 350,000 pages per year, online hosting and fulfillment services for more than 170 journals, Web-based peer review operations, sales and marketing, and product development, as well as the supporting publishing technologies.
Haynes was trained as a research chemist but moved on to scientific publishing. He likes scientific publishing because he stays in contact with science and scientists while keeping a hand in the business world. “Most of my publishing experience is with non-profit organizations, which allows me to give back a tremendous amount to the scientific community,” Haynes says.
The expanding Web and the shrinking global community are tremendous opportunities for scientific publishing, Haynes adds. “The Web allows the publishing business to break out of a model that has worked well for centuries, but demands finding ways to deal with much more content and new sales models, including whole countries as subscribers,” he says. “We are moving from a relatively simple print world to a more complex online world. In dealing with print publishing, the content just disappeared when the paper issues left the publisher. With online publishing, we can now understand better how people use and value the content. AIP is extremely well placed to play a leadership role in these exciting and challenging times.”
Haynes brings a long resume of experience to AIP, having worked for 20 years for the United Kingdom’s Institute of Physics Publishing and Royal Society of Chemistry Publishing. He has also had an active family life spending time with his wife Fiona and three teenage children. Haynes says he looks forward to cycling trips to explore Long Island, where AIP’s publishing operations reside.
He replaces Darlene Walters, who has held the position for more than 17 years.
