Science: In response to Iran’s announcement that women would be banned from 77 undergraduate degree programs, an international group of scholars and human rights groups called the policy “appalling.” The International Human Rights Network of Academies and Scholarly Societies condemned Iran’s policy and asked the United Nations and Iran’s fellow members of the Non-Aligned Movement to speak out. Women currently account for 65% of Iran’s undergraduates and approximately 70% of the degrees earned in the sciences. The new policy would ban them from enrolling in degrees in engineering, chemistry, and many other scientific and technical subjects.
The finding that the Saturnian moon may host layers of icy slush instead of a global ocean could change how planetary scientists think about other icy moons as well.
