New York Times: China is now working to take the lead in exploring remote and inaccessible parts of the ocean floor, which is rich in oil, minerals, and other resources. For the past eight years, China has been developing a submersible the size of a small truck that can carry three people. Designed to go deeper than any other craft in the world, the vessel will allow China to go after the anticipated trillions of dollars’ worth of mineral nodules on the ocean’s floor as well as objects of intelligence value, such as undersea cables, lost nuclear arms, sunken submarines, and warheads left over from missile tests.
The finding that the Saturnian moon may host layers of icy slush instead of a global ocean could change how planetary scientists think about other icy moons as well.
Modeling the shapes of tree branches, neurons, and blood vessels is a thorny problem, but researchers have just discovered that much of the math has already been done.
