NPR: In Antarctica, you’ll find 90 percent of the world’s glacial ice, but new research from the US Geological Survey shows that every ice front in the southern part of the Antarctic Peninsula is retreating. Jane Ferrigno US Geological Survey is the lead author of that new report. She tells NPR that scientists have known for a while that some of the peninsula’s ice shelves are breaking up.
The finding that the Saturnian moon may host layers of icy slush instead of a global ocean could change how planetary scientists think about other icy moons as well.
Modeling the shapes of tree branches, neurons, and blood vessels is a thorny problem, but researchers have just discovered that much of the math has already been done.
