Science in the State Department

With the formal establishment February 6, 1951, of the Office of Science Adviser under the direction of the Under Secretary of State, official implementation may be said to have begun of the recommendations contained in “Science and Foreign Relations,” the report of the Survey Group headed by Dr. Lloyd V. Berkner. The appointment of Dr. Joseph B. Koepfli to the post of Science Adviser and chief of this office has already been announced in this journal. The intent of this article is, first, to summarize the activities which led to the establishment of a Science Office in the State Department and, second, to describe briefly the progress made thus far—both since the official date mentioned above and during the preparatory period which preceded it.
