Physics instruction in California high schools

Accreditation of California high schools by the University of California has as its purpose the designation of those high schools whose quality of instruction and standards of grading are such that their graduates are admissible to the University solely on the basis of their high‐school grades. At the time of initial accreditation, and before the collegiate performance of the school’s graduates is known, the school is visited and its college preparatory functions studied. Among the college preparatory courses, the laboratory science offerings stand out as being generally representative of the over‐all quality of instruction of a particular school, and thus have been scrutinized most carefully in examining applicant schools. Subsequent retention of a school on the accredited list is conditional on continuing satisfactory performance of the school’s graduates in college work.
