Do it yourself

OCT 01, 1956
The following remarks are from an afterdinner address at the Eastern Summer Meeting of the American Physical Society, New Haven, Conn., June 22, 1956
L. W. Mckeehan

A previous speaker, my friend Pollard, has emphasized our collective aspect, and the relation of the world of physics to the universe of mankind. I have chosen a much narrower subject, for I am asking each of you to think about his individual duties and privileges. To the extent that I thus ignore societies, even the American Physical Society, and institutions, even Yale University, I am a reactionary, but I am looking into the future as well as into the past when I now proceed to the subject of my speech, not announced in advance, and urge each and every one of you, as often as you can, to “Do it yourself.”
