Sun dogs over Stockholm painted by Urban

APR 20, 2015
Physics Today

On this day in 1535 the atmospheric phenomenon known as sun dogs appeared in the sky above Stockholm, Sweden. A painter called Urban depicted the event, creating the earliest known recording of the phenomenon. Sun dogs belong to class of halo effects; they are caused by sunlight scattering off ice crystals. Urban’s original painting was lost. The oil painting here is a copy made in 1636 by Jacob Elbfas.

Date in History: 20 April 1535
