Born on 6 January 1932 in New York City, physical chemist Stuart Rice is an emeritus professor at the University of Chicago. He received a bachelor’s degree from Brooklyn College and a PhD from Harvard University. Rice “has influenced the course of virtually every aspect of contemporary physical chemistry, and has shaped its directions broadly and powerfully,” according to the committee that awarded him the 2011 Wolf Prize in Chemistry. He has studied the structure of polymers and DNA and analyzed electronic excitations in various substances, including organic crystals. Rice’s research led to the development of organic photovoltaics and light-emitting diodes. He received the National Medal of Science in 1999. (Photo credit: University of Chicago)
