NPR: NASA’s Radiation Belt Storm Probes mission was launched 30 August to study the Van Allen Radiation Belts, a hazardous region of space around Earth that is filled with high-energy particles. Recently, the probes recorded the clearest radio signals yet emitted by the energetic particles in Earth’s magnetosphere. The signals, which are audible to humans, sound like birds chirping and have been dubbed “chorus.” In this interview with National Public Radio’s Flora Lichtman, Craig Kletzing of the University of Iowa plays the recordings and discusses their significance.
