Science: Materials scientists at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have created wearable flexible polymers with embedded nanocircuits. When wearing the “smart fingertips” and pressing them against flat surfaces, the researchers could feel a tingling from the current generated by the pressure. John Rogers, the lead researcher, believes that the material could have numerous medical applications, from giving surgeons information about temperature and blood flow in their patients’ organs to restoring sensation for burn victims and amputees who have lost their natural skin.
The finding that the Saturnian moon may host layers of icy slush instead of a global ocean could change how planetary scientists think about other icy moons as well.
