Nature: As far back as 1994, researchers showed that a quantum computer could easily break through common RSA encryption techniques, but no actual quantum computer had yet been built. Now that basic quantum computers are close to realization, security experts are attempting to develop cryptographic techniques that are resistant to quantum algorithm decryption. Even national intelligence agencies are open about the potential threat posed by quantum computing. Although a few encryption algorithms have already been developed, implementing them is difficult because of the amount of memory required to store public keys. Adopting quantum-resistant encryption techniques now, however, will help protect against “intercept now, decrypt later” attacks in which data is stolen and stored until decryption capabilities have advanced.
The finding that the Saturnian moon may host layers of icy slush instead of a global ocean could change how planetary scientists think about other icy moons as well.
