Scan Pyramids project seeks to reveal details of Egyptian tombs

OCT 26, 2015
Physics Today

Japan Times : The same technology used to scan a damaged reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami is now going to be used to explore four pyramids in Egypt. An international team of researchers from Egypt, Canada, France, and Japan plans to use muon scattering to construct x-ray images of the pyramids’ interiors. Unlike excavation, the technique is nondestructive and could reveal previously hidden clues to the pyramids’ architecture and interior design. The researchers say they also hope to find as-yet-undiscovered chambers, possibly including the burial place of Queen Nefertiti. A similar technique was used a decade ago to scan the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan, Mexico.
