Robert H. Simpson

On this date in 1912, Robert H. Simpson was born in Corpus Christi, Texas. Simpson (shown at left with Cecil Gentry) was an early proponent of research about hurricanes and was the first director of the National Hurricane Research Project. While serving as director of the National Hurricane Center (NHC), he helped develop the well-known Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale with Herbert Saffir. He also established a dedicated satellite meteorology unit at the NHC, and his efforts led the Navy, Air Force, NOAA to upgrade the aircraft used in hurricane research. (Image credit: Neal Dorst)
