Private and public researchers work to create European open science cloud

JUL 09, 2015
Physics Today

Nature : A continent-wide cloud-computing platform to host data from scientists across multiple disciplines is being discussed by the European Commission. Several business models have been proposed, including the Helix Nebula Marketplace, which is a portal involving 30 cloud providers. Although such a cloud system could start relatively small, with just 10 petabytes of storage, it would need to expand to 20 times that size to serve all of Europe, says CERN’s Bob Jones, coordinator of the Helix Nebula. Creating a system that protects sensitive data, keeps costs down, and is fair to all users is the challenge.
