Price for US wind power installations dropped in 2014

AUG 12, 2015
Physics Today

Ars Technica : After several years in which wind turbine hardware prices rose and the number of installations dropped, the US Department of Energy reports that costs dropped in 2014. The newer hardware being installed costs just $9 per MWh, below the lowest-ever prices in the 2000s. In 2014 wind power accounted for one-fourth of the generating capability added to the US power grid, down from being one-third between 2007 and 2014. The low cost of construction has contributed to the all-time low prices for wind-generated electricity. However, the cost benefit is also driven by a federal tax credit that will end this year unless it is renewed. Without the tax credit, new construction is expected to slow significantly.
