Predicted El Niño could cause widespread flooding in California

Los Angeles Times : Southern California is gearing up for what forecasters are saying could be the most powerful El Niño event on record and the torrential rainfall it could bring. Although the Los Angeles County Flood Control District has been working to clear debris basins and channels that are part of the county’s flood-control system, Devil’s Gate Dam in Pasadena remains an area of concern. The county would like to remove some 2.4 million cubic yards of accumulated sediment, but the project is being opposed by local residents, including recreation enthusiasts and environmentalists, who say it will disrupt human activities and destroy wildlife habitats. After a four-year dry spell, the region is in desperate need of rainfall. However, experts say, even a monster El Niño is unlikely to end the drought.
