Patent reform advances in the US Senate

JUN 10, 2015
Physics Today

Chemical & Engineering News : Last week, a bill to limit the number of lawsuits by patent trolls was approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee. Patent trolls are companies that buy the ownership rights to ambiguous patents and then sue other companies for infringement. The bill is widely supported by technology companies, who are frequent targets of such lawsuits. Biotechnology firms, pharmaceutical companies, and universities have criticized the bill as potentially undermining their intellectual property rights. Whether the bill will be brought to the floor in the Senate is still unclear, and a similar bill in the House has still not made it out of committee.
