Nikolay Gennadiyevich Basov

On this date in 1922, Nobel laureate Nikolay Gennadiyevich Basov was born in Usman, Russia. After serving in the Army during WW2, Basov earned degrees from the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute and the Lebedev Physical Institute and worked at both schools. His work in quantum electronics led to the development of masers and lasers, which earned him the 1964 Nobel Prize along with Alexander Prokhorov and Charles H. Townes.
