New Observatory in Hawaii

The Institute of Science and Technology of the University of Michigan has announced that it will build an astronomical observatory on 10 000‐ft Mt. Haleakala on the Hawaiian island of Maui. The new facility, which will conduct both astronomical observations and missile‐tracking operations, will cost about $5 million. Of this sum, $4 350 700 has been provided by the Advanced Research Project Agency under a threeyear contract with IST.
