New Scientist: In an effort to curb Earth’s loss of biodiversity—the degree of variation of life forms within a given ecosystem—international environmental negotiations have been ongoing since enactment of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in 1993. The latest is the biodiversity summit in Nagoya, Japan, currently taking place 1829 October. The Japan summit marks the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties, the governing body in charge of implementing the goals set forth by the CBD. Unfortunately, the ongoing disagreement between countries with the richest biodiversity, such as Brazil, and Western countries that exploit the genetic resources threatens to stalemate any potential actions.
