Methane found in Martian rock samples

JUN 17, 2015
Physics Today

Los Angeles Times : Crushed rock from Martian meteorites has yielded traces of methane, say researchers whose paper was published online this week in Nature Communications. Because the majority of methane on Earth comes from living things, scientists believe its presence on Mars may indicate that microbial life exists, or existed at one time, below the planet’s surface. However, the finding of methane has not proven conclusive in itself, since there are other ways it could have arrived or been produced on Mars. Nevertheless, the possibility that it exists is fueling interest in further Mars exploration.
