Medical editors call for the sharing of research data

NPR : Until now medical researchers publishing the results from clinical trials have not been required to make the data gathered publicly available. The main reason is proprietary: Many researchers want to retain the rights to their original data for future analysis, studies, and papers. However, the practice has been criticized because of the lack of transparency and the inability to independently verify the results. Now the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors has submitted a proposal that would make data sharing a condition of publication. The committee says that sharing data would have many benefits, not only in allowing the validation of study results but also in allowing other scientists to bring new insights and develop new hypotheses.
