On this day five years ago, the space shuttle Atlantis lifted off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, launching the final mission of the US space shuttle program. Commander Chris Ferguson, pilot Doug Hurley, and mission specialists Sandy Magnus and Rex Walheim delivered parts and supplies to astronauts on the International Space Station. Atlantis landed safely on a Kennedy runway 13 days later, on 21 July 2011. Today Atlantis is on display at the Kennedy Space Center visitor complex. (Photo credit: NASA/Tony Gray and Tom Farrar)
