Today is the birthday of Jocylen Bell Burnell, who was born on this date in 1943 in Lurgan, Northern Ireland. Burnell, as a postgraduate was the first person to observe and analyze radio pulsars. Despite her role in building the telescope and being the person who first identified pulsars, she was not a recipient of the 1974 Nobel Prize, which was awarded to her thesis supervisor Antony Hewish and Martin Ryle for the development of radio aperture synthesis and the discovery of pulsars.
