On this date in 1717, Jean-Baptiste le Rond d’Alembert was born in Paris, France. D’Alembert was a polymath who contributed to mathematics, physics, philosophy, musical theory, the translation of Latin texts, and more. His contributions to math and physics include a formula to solve the wave equation, the first ratio test for the convergence of a series, a theoretical explanation for refraction, and the proof that the drag on an object moving in an incompressible, inviscid fluid is zero.
