Japan gears up to host linear collider

Science : Currently in the planning stage, the International Linear Collider (ILC) is a collaborative effort among research groups in Europe, the Americas, and Asia. Designed to complement the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, the ILC will likely be built in Japan. Toward that end, Japan’s high-energy accelerator research organization KEK has now released a plan calling for the tripling of its science and engineering workforce to provide the human resources that will be needed to execute the project. Those involved in the planning hope that Japan’s government will approve the action plan by 2018 so that construction can begin by 2020 and experiments can start up around 2030.
