On this date in 1885, mathematician, physicist, and philosopher Hermann Weyl was born in Elmshorn, Germany. Weyl earned his PhD in mathematics under David Hilbert at the University of Göttingen then worked at ETH Zürich alongside Einstein. Following the rise of Naziism, he moved back to Göttingen and then to the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton until he retired in 1951. Weyl made significant contributions in a wide range of areas in mathematics and physics, including the first gauge theory, one of the first attempts to combine gravitation and electromagnetism, and there are dozens of concepts named after him.
