Global warming could cause island near US capital to disappear

DEC 16, 2015
Physics Today

New Scientist : A potential future victim of global warming is Tangier Island, located in the Chesapeake Bay about 170 km SE of Washington, DC. Home to some 700 people, Tangier is part of an island group that has been inhabited since the 1700s. However, because of global sea-level rise due to climate change, the islands have been steadily shrinking since they were first mapped in 1850. Once covering 875 hectares, the islands now cover just 320 hectares. David Schulte of the US Army Corps of Engineers and coworkers, who used historic land-loss rates and projected sea-level rise to assess the islands’ future , say that unless action is taken, Tangier will be completely submerged within 50 years.
