OCT 16, 2015
Physics Today

It’s the birthday of Giovanni Arduino, who was born in 1714 in Caprino Veronese, Italy. A mining engineer, Arduino made observations of rock formations in Northern Italy, which led him to propose one of the first classification schemes for the age of rocks. Although the terms of his classification scheme -- Primitive, Secondary, Tertiary and Volcanic, or Quaternary -- are no longer applied in their original sense, his concept of associating age with stratification remains.

Date in History: 16 October 1714
