Giant satellite network to provide worldwide internet access

JUN 15, 2015
Physics Today

BBC : European aerospace company Airbus is poised to build the world’s largest satellite network. Comprising some 648 satellites, OneWeb is designed to provide high-speed internet across the globe. The satellites will be placed in low Earth orbit and connect to user terminals on the ground. Not only will OneWeb allow companies to extend their service into rural areas, but it will also provide backup when other infrastructure shuts down due to crises such as earthquakes and other natural disasters. The multibillion-dollar project will be 10 times as large as any previous sky-borne commercial network.
