Germany sees success in increased university research funding

SEP 08, 2015
Physics Today

Nature : In 2006 Germany established the Excellence Initiative, an 11-year, €4.6 billion ($5 billion) funding program to elevate the international competitiveness of select German universities. A report released on 3 September by the DFG, Germany’s main research funding agency, suggests the effort is finding success. The 14 “elite” universities that are receiving extra funding have seen a steady increase in the number of papers published in academic journals that are in the top 10% of papers by citation rate. However, four additional universities that aren’t receiving the extra funding have seen a similar increase.
