Today is the birthday of George Irving Bell who was born on 4 August 1926 in Evanston, Illinois. After studying under Hans Bethe at Cornell University, Bell worked at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory for T Division, which was then developing the first thermonuclear weapon. Bell’s work was focused on understanding neutron transport, which later made him an expert on the physics of nuclear reactors. In the 1960s he transitioned from nuclear physics into biology and biophysics and in 1988 was the founding director of the Center for Human Genome Studies, a major part of the Human Genome Project.
