Nature: A team led by Gérard Mourou, director of the Laboratory of Applied Optics near Paris, believes it can design a laser source that is a thousand trillion times more intense than the billion dollar US National Ignition Facility, for one tenth the cost of NIF. The French government agreed on the 15 February to pay for an experimental beam at the Laboratory of Applied Optics to prove whether the concept will work. The research is part of effort by particle physicists to consider cost as a consideration for the next generation of particle physics equipment.
The finding that the Saturnian moon may host layers of icy slush instead of a global ocean could change how planetary scientists think about other icy moons as well.
Modeling the shapes of tree branches, neurons, and blood vessels is a thorny problem, but researchers have just discovered that much of the math has already been done.
