Today is the birthday of France Córdova, director of the National Science Foundation, who was born on 5 August 1947 in Paris, France. After earning a PhD in physics from CalTech, she worked as an astrophysicist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, then was the head of the astronomy department at Penn State University. In 1993, she became the youngest person and first woman to be appointed NASA’s Chief Scientist. After returning to academia, in 2007, she became the president of Purdue University. In 2014, she was confirmed by the Senate as the 14th director of the National Science Foundation.
