Extreme smog forces China to issue red alert

BBC : Because of the severe smog that Beijing has been experiencing, the city is issuing its first-ever red alert. Earlier today air pollution monitors at the US Embassy reported that the intensity of fine particulate matter was 10 times the recommended limit. For that reason, starting Tuesday, schools will be closed, construction halted, and car traffic halved until Thursday, when a cold front has been forecast to arrive. The city had already been under orange alert since 30 November. At the climate change conference under way in Paris, President Xi Jinping has vowed to reduce China’s carbon emissions.
