European Commission to create new scientific advising system

MAY 13, 2015
Physics Today

Science : The European Commission (EC) has announced its plan to create a mechanism to provide timely, high-level scientific advice across all policy areas. Called the Scientific Advice Mechanism, it will include both a seven-member panel of advisers and a protocol for tapping the expertise of Europe’s national academies and scientific societies. The new system is designed to fill the void left when EC president Jean-Claude Juncker dissolved the position of chief scientific adviser last November. “Up to €6 million” ($6.7 million) may be budgeted for organizing the supply of science advice from national academies, according to research commissioner Carlos Moedas.
